Philosophy Department's Year in Ethics
Some of the bibliographies listed above were done for 2 lecture series in
1996
sponsored by
the Philosophy Department at the University of California at Irvine and
the Matchette Foundation. 8
leading philosophers in the field of Ethics were invited to give 2 public
lectures, one supported by the Matchette Foundation, the other named in
memory of A.I. Melden, the founding father of the Philosophy Department at
UCI and head of the Academic Senate during the initial years of the new
campus at Irvine, and an important philosopher in the field of ethics and
action-theory, whose publications included Free Action,
Rights and Right Conduct, and Rights and Persons. Abe
Melden also edited an anthology of original essays, Essays in Moral
Philosophy, and the standard text for Ethics courses for many years,
Ethical Theories: A Book of Readings. The 8 philosophers who gave
talks were: Jerome Schneewind, Tom Scanlon, Jon Elster, Philippa Foot,
Martha C. Nussbaum, Christine M. Korsgaard, John D. McDowell and Allan F.
Gibbard.
