What is EndNote?
EndNote is a Bibliographic Management Software that
enables you to collect and manage references to books, articles, etc.,
format them according to styles (e.g., MLA, APA, Turabian, Chicago);
and create a bibliography for use in a research paper or publication. More

How do I get EndNote?
EndNote is a stand alone software application. For off campus
use, students, faculty and staff should buy a copy of the EndNote software
at the UC Irvine Computer Store. (There is no remote access to the Libraries' copies.)
Can I use EndNote on library computers?
Currently the Libraries provide access to 1 licensed copy of EndNote version 9
in the Multimedia
Resources Center (MRC) at Langson Library, in the Interactive
Learning Center (ILC) at Science Library, and in the Grunigen
Medical Library at the UCI Medical Center.

Library Workshops
The UC Irvine Libraries offer introductory workshops each
quarter. If the workshops dates and times do not fit into your schedule,
you can request an alternative date.

- What is a Filter?
After exporting references from the library database of your
choice, you will need to import your references into EndNote. EndNote
must be told how to interpret the exported data upon import. Since
each database vendor has a unique syntax for their exported references,
the filter tells EndNote how to interpret the proper field (e.g. title,
author) for each reference element.
The EndNote software package provides preconfigured filters for
most databases, however, there are some circumstances when you must
locate and download the filter you need from the EndNote
filters website or in our list of UC
Irvine filters.
- What is a Connection File?
Connection files allow you to search and import references
from library databases without leaving EndNote. Not
all databases are compatible with this "Connect" feature. They must
be compatible with the Z39.50 protocol. It is always
best to search each library database within its native interface. By
doing so, you can take advantage of the unique search features provided
by the database manufacturer. Some local and well used UC
Irvine Connection Files are available, but many others
can be downloaded from the EndNote
Connection Files website and the California
Digital Library EndNote site.
Top of Page Export and Direct Export Instructions
The success of this software rests on the ability to export references
from one database and import them into your EndNote library. Using standard
formatting and filters, the incoming data is properly interpreted and placed
into the corresponding EndNote field. Some databases have Direct Export,
therefore, the databases can communicate directly with EndNote, automatically
open EndNote on your computer and import the selected references. A database
filter is not necessary for databases with Direct Export (e.g. ISI Web
of Science, BIOSIS, MLA Bibliography.)
