What is RefWorks?
RefWorks is a Bibliographic Management Software that
enables you to collect and manage references to books, articles, etc.,
format them according to styles (e.g., MLA, APA, Turabian, Chicago);
and create a bibliography for use in a research paper or publication. More

How do I get RefWorks?
The UC Irvine Libraries has paid for a campus-wide subscription to
RefWorks. It is a web application (http://www.refworks.com)
accessible from every campus computer and every off-campus computer that
is connected to the campus network through the Virtual
Private Network (VPN).

Library Workshops
The UC Irvine Libraries offer introductory workshops each
quarter. If the workshops dates and times do not fit into your schedule,
you can request
an alternative date.
Exporting/Importing Records
The success of this software rests on the ability to export references
from one database and import them into your RefWorks database. Using
standard formatting and filters, the incoming data is properly interpreted
and placed into the corresponding RefWorks field. Here are some instructions
for importing/exporting from some commonly used library databases:

RefWorks FAQ
What happens to my RefWorks account/references when I leave UC Irvine?
- If you are going to another academic institution with access to RefWorks,
you can export your entire UC Irvine RefWorks account and transfer
it to your new RefWorks at that institution (For instructions, search
the RefWorks
help index for "back up".)
- If you plan to personally subscribe to RefWorks ($100 annually),
you can export your entire UC Irvine RefWorks account and transfer
it to your new personal RefWorks account (For instructions, search
the RefWorks
help index for "back up".)
- If you will not have access to RefWorks when you leave, you can export
your entire UC Irvine RefWorks library (choose "export" from the "references" menu)
for use with another bibliographic management software package, as
a citation list, in RefWorks format, XML, etc. to be stored for later
use.
What is the RefWorks Group Code for UC Irvine folks?
- For security purposes, we do not use the Group Code for off campus access
to RefWorks. Instead, please use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access RefWorks
from off campus. For instructions on using the VPN, go to
http://www.lib.uci.edu/services/how/connect.html.
What is my Proxy URL/I'm being prompted for a Proxy URL?
- It sounds like you are trying to use RefWorks with Write-n-Cite from off campus. To do so you will need to use the VPN software rather than the Web VPN. Both VPN versions allow UCI students/faculty/staff to access subscription based library resources from off campus by authenticating your current UCI affiliation. However, Write-n-Cite is a separate web application that will not authenticate properly through the WebVPN. You must use the VPN software if you are going to use Write-n-Cite from off campus. You can download and install the VPN software at http://www.nacs.uci.edu/security/vpn/vpninstall.html
