We are delighted to announce the appointment of Lorelei Tanji as university librarian, effective October 1, 2012.
Ms. Tanji joined UC Irvine in 1990 as fine arts librarian, and
has served as associate university librarian (AUL) for
collections since 2002 and as interim university librarian since
April of last year. As AUL for collections, she has been
responsible for the management of more than 3.2 million volumes
and 132,000 journals in electronic and print formats, as well as
myriad manuscripts, microforms, maps, data, and digital
collections held in Langson Library, Ayala Science Library, and
Grunigen Medical Library. She has also long been part of the
library's senior administrative team dealing with library-wide
strategic planning and policy decision-making, providing
leadership for participation in UC collaborative collection
development activities, and representing the libraries in a wide
range of campus, university, regional and national bodies. She
holds an M.L.S. in Library & Information Science and an M.A. in
Music from UCLA, and a B.A. in Music from U.C. Davis.
As interim university librarian, Ms. Tanji has already made
tremendous strides in advancing the mission of the UCI Libraries.
She developed budget planning models that will support library
functions under a variety of funding scenarios; successfully
engaged community members and library donors; appointed several
senior managers to ensure strong library leadership for the
academic units and digital library infrastructure; and oversaw
the completion of renovations in Langson Library and Ayala
Science Library. She addressed campus user priorities for print
and digital collections that support teaching and research;
supported transitions from print to digital collections and the
maintenance of a robust library website; and assessed future
library needs and opportunities. She also remained deeply
involved in library leadership at the system-wide, regional and
national levels.
