Using Business Databases for Personal Investing

The UCI Libraries are now offering remote access to a number of business databases to Library Partners at the Patron level ($250) and above. These workshops are designed for both current Partners and non- members who would like to learn more about how to use these exciting tools to help them be more knowledgeable about the business world and investing. We will introduce each of the following resources in some detail, giving examples of questions each is best at answering, and demonstrating search strategies. Then, there will be some practice exercises to let you put your new skills to use.

Business Source Alumni Edition: A consolidation of global business and non-business news from a variety of difference resources, such as newspapers, magazines, newswires, and trade and industrial journals. You can find in-depth company information, and expand your search criteria for a maximum number of results. Learn a few not-so-obvious features that can help you keep current.

Value Line Investment Survey: Contains information and advice on approximately 1,700 stocks, more than 90 industries, the stock market, and the economy. Includes up-to-date statistics on a company’s investment profile; economic and stock market forecasts; one-page write-ups of selected stocks; model portfolios; and financial and stock market statistics. Value Line, according to one source, “stresses its independence and objectivity in analyzing and tracking investments. … It has been one of the most famous stock forecasting publications in the United States for the last seventy-five years.” Many of us are familiar with the loose-leaf edition; here’s a chance to get familiar with its online continuation.

Snapshots North America: Snapdata's collection of U.S. and Canadian market research reports on many products and services. These brief (10-13 pages) industry profile reports provide information on market size, market shares, forecasts, and a list of the key competitors. From tortillas to toothpaste to tourism, find an excellent summary of an industry or service and its major players and basic statistics.

Participants are expected to have basic fluency in using computer hardware (such as the mouse).
