Welcome to the UCI Libraries' Southeast Asian Archive
World Wide Web page!
Since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 over 1,200,000 refugees and immigrants
from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam have arrived in the United States, with 40% settling
in California. In order to document their experiences in a new culture the University
of California, Irvine Library established the Southeast Asian Archive in 1987.
The Archive collects materials relating to the resettlement of Southeast Asian
refugees and immigrants in the United States (and to a lesser extent, worldwide),
the boat people and land refugees, and the culture and history of Cambodia, Laos,
and Vietnam. There is a special focus on materials pertaining to Southeast Asians
in Orange County and California.
Holdings are in English and in Southeast Asian languages (primarily Vietnamese),
and include books, refugee orientation materials, government documents, reports
and surveys, periodicals, journal articles, newspaper clippings, video and audio
recordings, ephemera, personal and institutional papers. Particular attention
is given to collecting theses and dissertations.
The collection is available for study and research to students, faculty, and
staff of the University of California and other educational institutions, and
to the general public.
Records for cataloged materials in the Southeast Asian Archive can be located
in ANTPAC, UCI's online catalog, accessible through the ANTPAC button at the upper
left of this page. Cataloged materials can be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan.
We are particularly interested in receiving materials from Southeast Asian
organizations and individuals. Documents, personal stories, photographs, correspondence,
newsletters, ephemera, reports, books, magazines and journals are all needed and
welcomed.
