Documenting the Southeast Asian Refugee Experience

The holdings of the Southeast Asian Archive will be the subject of the UC Irvine Langson Library Reynolds Gallery Fall 1998 exhibit, "Documenting the Southeast Asian Refugee Experience." Highlighted are the contributions of numerous donors in building the Archive. All materials in the exhibit are from the Southeast Asian Archive, and individual donors of materials will be recognized throughout.

The exhibit covers the challenges faced by the refugees in fleeing their home countries, including time spent in refugee camps and initial resettlement. Additional materials focus on the experiences and achievements of the Cambodian, Hmong, Lao, and Vietnamese communities in the United States. Items to be exhibited include photographs, works of art, letters, manuscripts, artifacts, and publications.

"Documenting the Southeast Asian Refugee Experience" will open the week of October 12. It can be viewed when the Langson Library is open: (Monday-Thursday, 8:00AM-11:00 PM; Friday, 8:00 AM-6:00 PM, Saturday, 9:00-6:00 PM; Sunday, 12 noon-11:00 PM). The exhibit is open to the public and admission is free. There is a charge for parking at UCI. Please call 949/824-7486 for parking information.

Upcoming VAC Activities

The 6th annual Little Saigon Cleanup will take place on Saturday, November 21, 9:00-12 noon. Participants should meet at the corner of Bolsa and Magnolia near the ABC supermarket. This annual cleanup day attracts student volunteers from schools and colleges, along with community activists. Contact VAC co-chair Hao Truong for more information.

Applications are being taken for the Vietnamese American Mentor Program (VAMP). VAMP 's goal is to build relationships between high school and college students through a "big brother/big sister" relationship. New Southeast Asian Studies Class

Humanities Research Institute 1998-1999 postdoctoral fellow Jacqueline Siapno is offering "Southeast Asia: Literatures and Visual Cultures" fall quarter. This course is a survey of colonial and post-independence Southeast Asian history as articulated in literature, film, religion and popular culture. Examined will be ideas of power, political agency, sexuality, and resistance, with a strong emphasis on analysis of cultural attributes and images activated in the "traditional" representations of the "model" female. Special focus on Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, and East Timor. Course code: 20756.

Cambodian Photographic Exhibitions

Two distinct perspectives of Cambodian history and culture are explored in photographic exhibitions currently being held in Long Beach and San Diego.

The Arts of Aspara Gallery and Cultural Center features photographs by Japanese-born photographer, Kendro Izo of the ancient stone temples of Angkor in "Light over Ancient Angkor." The dates of the exhibition are September 11-November 10, 1998. The gallery is located at 2338 East Anaheim Street, Suite 105, Long Beach, CA 90804; 562/439-3932; khmerart@gte.net.

The Museum of Photographic Art, 1649 El Prado, Balboa Park, San Diego presents two exhibitions. "Facing Death: Portraits from Cambodia's Killing Fields," pays homage to the thousands of Cambodian men women and children who were systematically photographed before being tortured and executed by Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge. This exhibition closes November 5, 1998. Kendo Izu's photographs of Angkor will be featured through November 10, 1998 in "Light over Ancient Angkor." The UCI Library Southeast Asian Archive was established in 1987 to document the resettlement experiences of refugees and immigrants from Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam who have come to the United States since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.

Donations of materials and funds are greatly appreciated. Materials from Southeast Asian individuals and organizations (e.g., personal stories, photographs, correspondence, records of organizations and businesses, brochures, pamphlets, programs, posters, audio and videotapes, newsletters, reports, books, magazines and journals) are particularly welcome.
