UCI Honors Yen Do

Gerry Munoff presents award to Mr. Yen Do

UCI Libraries Director Gerald Munoff presents a plaque recognizing Mr. Yen Do, founding editor of the Nguoi Viet newspaper, and chairman of the Southeast Asian Archive Advisory Board at UC Irvine on February 21, 2001. The ceremony was held in conjunction with a talk by Dr. Franklin Odo, Director of the Smithsonian Program for Asian Pacific American Studies, Washington D.C. Dr. Odo came to UCI to visit the Southeast Asian Archive and to encourage the on-going collection of documents and artifacts concerning the Southeast Asian American community.

Camp for Youth Fundraiser

The Little Saigon Foundation Camp for Youth will be holding its first fundraising dinner, "Hinh Dung = Imagine," on Sunday, June 3. The purpose is to support a community-based camp program which provides an opportunity for at-risk youths to explore issues of assimilation, cultural diversity, community building, and stress management outside urban settings.

The dinner will be held at 6:00 PM at the Emerald Bay Seafood Restaurant, 501 W. Edinger, Ave., Suite 5, Santa Ana. Tickets purchased by May 19, 2001 are $25 per person or $45 per couple. Tickets purchased after May 19, 2001 are $30 per person or $50 per couple. Pre-purchase of tickets is recommended as seats are limited. The event will include dinner, raffle drawing and entertainment. Please send your checks for tickets to Camp for Youth, P.O. Box 4331, Garden Grove, CA 92842-4331. Donations are tax deductible. New Online Vietnamese Studies Journal

The Vietnamese Studies Internet Resource Centre (VSIRC); www.vstudies.org. is accepting submis-sions of articles for volume 1, issue 1 for a new online academic journal, The Review of Vietnamese Studies. Articles related to the adaptation of the Vietnamese diaspora, Vietnamese culture, and Vietnamese history are especially welcome. Articles will be published in both html and pdf formats in a special section of the VSIRC website dedicated to the new online journal.

Papers should be submitted by June 30, 2001. Articles will be reviewed for publication by Mark E. Pfeifer, Ph.D., editor of the VSIRC website. Authors may submit their papers for possible inclusion in the new journal by email attachment to vstudies@yahoo.com. Authors should include a list of references cited, if any, as well as personal biography listing academic interests, academic background, and professional affiliations. Manoa Journal Special Issue

The University of Hawaii's Manoa Journal: A Pacific Journal of International Writing is planning a special issue on the Vietnamese Diaspora to be published in summer 2002. Submissions of short fiction, personal essays, memoirs and poetry are being sought. The focus is on excellent literary writing for general readers, rather than essays and specialized articles meant for a scholarly, academic, or specialized audience. The deadline is the end of May 2001. The guest editors are Kevin Bowen and Nguyen Ba Chung at the University of Massachusetts - Boston Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequences.

UCI Ph.D. Joins UCLA Faculty

Dr. Thu-Huong Nguyen-Vo will be joining the UCLA faculty in Fall 2001 as an Assistant Professor in Asian American Studies, East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Southeast Asian Studies. She will be teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in these three programs on topics dealing principally with Vietnam and Vietnamese American Studies. Professor Nguyen Vo received her Ph.D. from UCI in Political Science in 1998. She currently is revising her dissertation, Governing the social: Prostitution and liberal governance in Vietnam during marketization, for publication. She also is pursuing a comparative study of garment workers in Vietnam and the U.S.

The UCI Library Southeast Asian Archive was established in 1987 to document the resettlement experiences of refugees and immigrants from Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam who have come to the United States since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.

Donations of materials and funds are greatly appreciated. Materials from Southeast Asian individuals and organizations (e.g., personal stories, photographs, correspondence, records of organizations and businesses, brochures, pamphlets, programs, posters, audio and videotapes, newsletters, reports, books, magazines and journals) are particularly welcome.
