Newspaper Clippings File
One of the resources we are developing in the
Archive is a file of newspaper clippings, as there
is lots of information in newspapers about
contemporary Southeast Asian American
communities. Sometimes it is the only source.
Articles vary from straightforward reporting of
local events and incidents to more extensive
articles and special sections on such topics as
Amerasians, the police community relationship,
and Vietnamese American high school students.
Most articles date from 1987, when the Southeast
Asian Archive began. However, the Archive was
given a collections, dated circa 1975, concerning
the first wave of Vietnamese refugees. These
have not yet been processed. Clippings are
photocopied on acid-free paper and then filed
according to a list of subjects. The majority of
the articles come from the Los Angeles Times,
(Orange County edition), and the Orange County
Register. Also represented, however, are the San
Diego Union, San Jose Mercury-News, Sacramento
Bee, Fresno Bee, San Francisco Chronicle, St.
Louis Post-Dispatch, and the New York Times.
The emphasis is on California, although not
limited to that geographical area. In fact, one
file concerns Vietnamese in Europe, and there
are files on Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.
A wide variety of topics is represented: festivals,
resettlement and relocation experiences, art,
Buddhism, business, film, race relations, mental
health, garment industry, earthquakes, even local
restaurants, to name a few. There is a special
effort to group together articles on timely
subjects, e.g., economic sanctions, refugees,
activities and opinions of Southeast Asian
Americans in regards to their native countries, hate
crimes, and AIDS.
Due to the nature of newspapers (every day there
is another one!) we're never up-to-date and there
is always a backlog of articles to photocopy and
file. It is a very labor-intensive activity. However,
it forms a valuable record of daily events and
pertinent issues in present-day Southeast Asian
American life.
Hmong California Times
The Southeast Asian Archive is now subscribing to
the Hmong California Times, a bi-lingual Hmong-
English newspaper published in Fresno. Recent
issues featured articles (in English) on the Hmong
community in Fresno, a criticism of the GAIN
program in Marysville, and an interview with Tou
Xia Thao, former mayor of Mouang Phoune.
Oral Histories
Volumes three and four of the bilingual oral
history series, The Vietnamese Community in
Orange County are now available. Topics covered
are Refugee Service and Mutual Assistance
Associations, and Preservation of Cultural Heritage
and the Vietnamese Media. Limited copies are
available at the Newhope Library branch of the
Santa Ana Public Library, 122 N. Newhope, Santa
Ana, CA 92703; 714/647-5792 for $30 each.
Copies for the Archive are presently being
cataloged and should be available for circulation
soon.
New Student Group at UCI
The Vietnamese American Coalition (VAC) of UC
Irvine held its first meeting on February 11. The
purpose of the new group "is to promote active
involvement and voice issues pertaining to the
Vietnamese American community, as well as
addressing social and political concerns relevant to
Vietnam." Future plans including working with
the Vietnamese Community of Orange County,
Inc., and participating in the Vietnamese American
Student Conference, to be held this Spring at
UCLA.
For more information leave a note in VAC's
mailbox at the Student Center or at the Cross
Cultural Center. Statement of objectives and
membership forms are also available at the
Southeast Asian Archive.
Vietnamese American Student Conference
April 23-25 are the dates for the Vietnamese
Student Conference to be held at UCLA. Topics
to be discussed include roots and cultural
identity, gender and sexuality, current issues in
Vietnam, "model minority" myth, racial relations,
and political participation and social
consciousness. For information contact Anna
Tran (310) 824-0803 or Van Mai (310) 446-9233.
UCI Student Paper Recognized!
David Frakt, a 1990 UCI graduate and History
major, had his senior honors thesis, "The
Vietnamese American College Student: Five
Lives in Historical Perspective," included as part
of the literature review section of a recent Ed.D.
dissertation by Peter Kiang at Harvard. David
interviewed students at UCI for his work, and
had used the Archive. When he gave me a copy
of his paper I thought both the quality of work
and interest in the topic merited having it
cataloged for MELVYL, the University of
California's online catalog. It has enjoyed a brisk
circulation, including interlibrary loan requests, as
evidenced by its inclusion in the above-mentioned
dissertation.
Student work is important. I'm always interested
in receiving student papers, interview tapes,
survey documentation, or other products of
research. It all contributes to the body of
materials documenting the Southeast Asian
American experience.
Southeast Asian Archive Recognized!
In a recent article, "Vietnamese American
Sexual Behaviors and HIV Infection," published
in the Journal of Sex Research, the UCI Library's
Southeast Asian Archive was credited as follows:
"Data on social and cultural factors.... The
Vietnamese Archive at the University of
California/Irvine Library has been the major
source of these published and unpublished
reports." Thanks very much. We appreciate the
acknowledgment.
