SEA Archive Recognized by Nguoi Viet

The Nguoi Viet Daily News, the Westminster based oldest and most prestigious Vietnamese language newspaper outside of Vietnam, commemorated its 18th anniversary and 4,000th issue (November 19th), on November 18, 1996 at a gala dinner at Little Saigon's Grand Garden restaurant. On this occasion the Southeast Asian Archive was recognized by the presentation of a plaque for its efforts "in preserving Vietnamese history and cultural heritages, and in developing a mutual understanding between communities."

Congratulations and best wishes to the Officers and Board of Directors of the Nguoi Viet for continued growth and success. We are very honored by their recognition of the Southeast Asian Archive's efforts.

Lunar New Year Celebrated at UCI

The Year of the Ox will be celebrated in style at UCI. For the past few years Chancellor Laurel L. Wilkening has visited community Tet festivals. She felt it was time for UCI to have their own event, to celebrate cultural diversity and strengthen ties to the community. Project Ngoc, the Vietnamese American Coalition, and the Vietnamese Student Association are planning this year's Lunar New Year's celebration. Featured will be a cultural show, food and game booths, a photography exhibit, and information about the activities of UCI Asian American student groups. This year will mark the beginning of a new tradition at UCI, as the Lunar New Year celebration is slated to be an annual event.

Festivities will take place on Thursday, February 6, at the UCI Student Center, 12:00-2:00 PM. All are welcome.

New Student Assistant: Chris Nguyen

Hi, my name is Chris Nguyen and I am the new student assistant. As a first year student at UCI I am glad to be a part of the SEA Archive because it is a great place. There is a lot of culture that surrounds you in this room and it is a great privilege to be working here. One thing I enjoy is reading the paper, searching for the right story that can be snipped out and placed into the archives. Students usually have no time to read the newspaper, and I am happy to have the opportunity to do this. The Archive is such a peaceful place because it is in the Library, and also there are so many things to read and search for.

As I look at our society today, I am very thankful for such things that people take for granted. One thing is being able to go to college and another is having a home with a family. Because without these things our lifestyle would be very different and complex. I see the poverty in our world and I know we cannot change it all at once, but we can only help to soothe the pain. I encourage others to come to this place and experience what it holds and what it can illustrate to us. I love being a part of this Archive because everything seems to come to life from the paintings, poems, pictures and the stories. It is an honor to be involved in the SEA Archives, and I hope this place continues its journey to collect knowledge.

Rancho Santiago College Intern: Tung Cao

The Southeast Asian Archive has been very fortunate to have the services of Mr. Tung Cao from the Library Technology program at Rancho Santiago College for six weeks of the Fall Quarter. Mr. Tung served as an intern and worked on the SEA Archive's Serials List, focusing on correct entry and subject categories for the Vietnamese language titles, and on processing ephemera.

Mr. Tung re-entered the United States in 1992. Twenty-five years previously he graduated from Indiana University, majoring in Instructional Systems Technology. Lately he has returned to school again, to "his daughters' college," as "this information era has spurred us to pursue life-long learning and self-instruction." He enjoyed his internship at the SEA Archives in which he feels his "heart and mind massaged by the documents that reflect both wretchedness and achievement" of his fellow boat people. Even though his internship is over, Mr. Tung continues to volunteer his time working with materials in the Archive.

Mr. Tung is a talented musician and photographer. He plays the cello with the Vietnamese American Philharmonic Association, Bellflower Symphony Orchestra, and has performed in Orange County, San Jose, and Washington D.C. His photographs of Vietnam will be exhibited at UCI' s Lunar New Year Celebration.
