National History Day ProjectThe Southeast Asian Archive has been pleased to have on display for the past few months a History Day Project from Kansas, "A Life Torn Apart: The Many Migrations of the Cambodian Peoples." In keeping with the 1998 History Day theme of "Migrations," the project was conceived by Jessica Johnson and Holly Serk, two students at Topeka's Seaman High School. Through photographs and words it documents events in Cambodia beginning in 1967 with the rise of the Khmer Rouge, their reign of terror through 1979, the exodus of refugees from Cambodia, and their resettlement in the United States. The two students interviewed Cambodian refugees in Long Beach as part of their research, and use quotations from these interviews in their project. The display was loaned to the Archive by Jessica Johnson's aunt, Janet Hund, who is a Sociology instructor at Long Beach City College.
