The Need for Private Support
UCI was founded in 1965 and has become a world-class educational institution
in record time. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks UCI among the nation's
12 best public universities. A first-rate university requires a first-rate library.
Collections of superior research materials are an essential factor that will enable
the university to meet an important goal set by the Chancellor: that UCI become
one of the top research universities in the country.
UCI is poised for rapid expansion during the coming decade. Student enrollment
currently stands at over 23,000 and is planned to grow to almost 30,000 by 2010.
The Libraries must expand collections to fulfill our obligation to meet the information
needs of UCI's growing faculty and student populations, as well as the growing
population of Orange County. Annually, over half of the more than 2 million users
of the Libraries are from the local community.
The collections of UC Irvine Libraries must be of the highest caliber in order to fulfill the University's commitment to excellence, to remain competitive with peer institutions, and to attract and retain the very best faculty and students.
As the cost of books, journals, and electronic resources continues to soar, purchasing power for library collections supported with state funds continues to shrink. Private support makes the difference between a good library and a great library. Donors who understand the crucial importance of quality collections of the finest research materials enable UCI to advance its goals as a leading research institution.
