The University of California, Irvine Libraries seek an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and user-oriented Health Sciences Reference Librarian to provide reference service at the Grunigen Medical Library for the period of approximately July 1, 2008 – December 31, 2008. This is a full-time temporary position which will be funded for six months from the date of hire, with a possibility of extension depending on operational and resource considerations. The Grunigen Medical Library is an active research and information facility located in the heart of the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. The Library serves UCI faculty, students, and staff including practicing physicians, health science researchers, and nursing and medical students. The Library is also open to patients and the general public.
Duties and Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Health Sciences Reference Librarian will be to provide excellent reference service including responding to in-person, telephone, e-mail, and live chat inquiries. The librarian will assist Grunigen Medical Library users in finding health science information in the vast array of electronic resources available through the Libraries’ website as well as in the extensive print collection of books and journals. The Health Sciences Reference Librarian may also participate in conducting library tours and orientations and assist with library instruction sessions and outreach activities sponsored by the Grunigen Medical Library. The position reports directly to the Head of the Grunigen Medical Library who may assign other duties as appropriate.
Qualifications
Required:
- Graduate degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience providing reference service.
- Working knowledge of and successful experience using a variety of print, electronic, and Internet reference resources.
- Familiarity with health sciences reference resources.
Salary & Benefits: Preferred appointment level $3,847 – $4,002 per month (Assistant Librarian I- Assistant Librarian III).
Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave.
