The University of California, Irvine Libraries are seeking a dynamic
leader to join an enthusiastic staff in building a research library of excellence for a
young and rapidly-growing university ranked nationally in the top universities. The
Director of Information Technology will work in a collaborative environment of evolving
institutional expectations and will manage growth and change to assure that high
quality information technology systems and services continue to support the needs of
the Libraries' staff and client community.
Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidate will play a critical role in providing innovative and
responsive leadership in strategic planning, development, implementation, management,
and coordination of information technologies and systems across the libraries.
As a member of the Technical Services Department Heads group, the Technical Services
Management Group, chair of the Information Technologies Management Committee, and
member of Library Council, the incumbent participates in library-wide planning and
policy making, and leads collaborative efforts to establish and attain strategic goals
to meet the information technology (IT) needs of the Libraries' staff and patrons.
Through effective communication, consultation, and collaboration, the incumbent builds
consensus about the Libraries' IT direction and implementation priorities and makes
decisions about appropriate courses of action. S/he evaluates the resources required
to accomplish planned service levels and strategic priorities; oversees development of
disaster prevention and recovery plans; employs assessment tools to measure
effectiveness of IT systems and services across the Libraries; coordinates campus
support and technical relationships with appropriate departments; attends local,
regional, and national meetings to maintain currency with developments in technology.
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Technical Services, the Director
of Information Technologies manages the Information Technology Department, promoting
effective customer service and a commitment to continuous service improvement. The
Director has responsibility for personnel management and will build and maintain
expertise within the department through staff training and professional development.
S/he conveys a broad understanding among departmental personnel of university and
library policies, oversees the creation and accomplishment of departmental annual plans
in the context of the Libraries' strategic goals, manages departmental budgets, and is
responsible for the development of policies and procedures for the department. The
Director oversees the design, development, and implementation of the Libraries'
information technologies identified as top priorities, promoting interoperability and
maintaining quality control within the Libraries' systems. On the UCI campus, s/he
collaborates with the heads of administrative and academic units on policy and
operational planning within the larger context of the campus network and systems. S/he
also works collaboratively with University of California colleagues system-wide in
consortial initiatives and opportunities.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in computer science, a related discipline, or equivalent education and experience
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in information technology
- Minimum of 2 years successful supervisory experience
- Thorough knowledge of computer hardware, network architectures, systems administration and software applications
- Demonstrated leadership, management and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to think analytically and solve problems
- Demonstrated skills in vendor relations and negotiations
- Excellent knowledge of information technology principles, processes, systems and standards
- Skill to adapt to change and balance work priorities in a fast paced environment
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working
relationships and to interact diplomatically with staff, vendors
and customers
- Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication
skills
- Demonstrated ability to set priorities and resolve competing demands
- Working knowledge of the development, application and assessment of information technology
- Knowledge of project management principles and practices
Desired:
- Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited library school
- Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging trends in higher education particularly in academic and digital library services and resources
- Working knowledge of an Integrated Library System
The Information Technology Department
The Information Technology Department supports the infrastructure, systems administration, network, desktop, web
presence, and digital project needs of the three UCI Libraries, servicing all library staff and the University user
community. The Department comprises the Director and 12 staff positions.
The Libraries
The UCI Libraries are committed to innovation and excellence and are in a major period of
growth and change. The Libraries consist of the Langson Library, the Science Library, the
Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. The Langson Library primarily
serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, Social Ecology, Business, the
Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library primarily serves
the Schools of Biological Sciences, Medicine, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Information
and Computer Sciences. The Grunigen Medical Library serves the UCI Medical Center, located in
Orange, 12 miles from the main campus.
The UCI Libraries have a staff of 273 FTE and an organizational structure that includes the
use of teams in conjunction with departments. The library collection consists of over 2.6
million volumes and over 53,000 current serial subscriptions and an aggressively expanding
electronic resources collection. The UCI Libraries are a member of the: Association of
Research Libraries (ARL), California Digital Library (CDL), Coalition of Networked Information
(CNI), Center for Research Libraries (CRL), Council on Library and Information Resources
(CLIR), International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and Scholarly
Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).
