What's New » The UC Irvine Libraries' Speaker Series: Shakespeare From Page to Stage
Shakespeare's plays constitute what many believe to be the greatest body of literature in any language, but their author never envisioned that they would be published in books. Rather, he wrote them to be played upon a stage. In addition to being a poet and dramatist, Shakespeare was an actor and the owner and manager of Elizabethan London's greatest theater. This exciting program will feature UCI Professor of Drama Robert Cohen, who will illustrate, using UCI student actors under his coaching and direction, how dramatic scripts are brought to theatrical life. In doing so, he will examine some core dramatic principles which, while rarely considered by literary critics and scholars, prove crucial in enlivening the words on a page with the conflict, meaning, comedy, and romance of live dramatic action. An exhibit of texts by and about Shakespeare, taken from the Libraries' rare book collections, will be on view. These will include a copy of the First Folio edition of Shakespeare's plays, printed in 1623, which was donated by UCI alumnus Patrick Hanratty. Robert Cohen is the Claire Trevor Professor of Drama at UCI. After receiving his Doctorate in Fine Arts from Yale in 1965, he became one of UCI's founding faculty members and the first chair of the Drama Department. He teaches acting at the Actors Center in New York, directs acting workshops around the world, and has directed dozens of productions of Shakespeare's plays and many other works. He is the author of numerous books and theatrical reviews. In 1991 Professor Cohen was awarded the UCI Medal.
