The UCI Libraries Speaker Series presents “Coping with Traumatic Life Events,” featuring Roxane Cohen Silver, professor of psychology and social behavior, and professor of medicine, at UC Irvine. Silver has conducted extensive research on coping with traumatic events ranging from personal grief to societal loss such as the September 11 tragedy. In her lecture, she will discuss how people cope with these traumatic events as well as common misconceptions about the coping process.
Silver is a leading expert in the field of stress and coping. In November 2005, she testified at the U.S. House of Representative’s Committee on Science hearing entitled The Role of Social Science Research in Disaster Preparedness and Response She recently completed a three-year, National Science Foundation-funded national study of how people have responded to Sept. 11. Her work seeks to examine cognitive, emotional, social, and physical responses to stressful life events, and to identify factors that facilitate successful adjustment to them. She also explores the long-term effects of traumatic life experiences, and considers how beliefs and expectations of the social network affect the coping process. Silver believes that public beliefs about how people are supposed to respond to traumatic events - sometimes fed by media and clinical lore – often stand in sharp contrast to what research shows about how they actually react.
