The UCI Libraries Speaker Series presents “Strategies for Successful Brain Aging,” featuring Carl Cotman, Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Psychobiology, and Director of the Institute for Brain Aging and Dementia at UCI. A leading expert in his field, Cotman will talk about what he and his colleagues have discovered are strategies for delaying cognitive decline with age and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Cotman has been studying the ability of the adult brain to form new connections and respond to injury and disease for more than 20 years. He was one of the first to make a connection between vitamin E and Alzheimer’s, and is now focusing on how exercise influences the maintenance of brain function with aging. Cotman’s landmark studies at UCI since 1968 have advanced the understanding of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other age-related disorders, and his recent research on exercise and antioxidants has led to the development of strategies to promote successful brain aging.
