The UCI Libraries have an obligation to ensure that students, faculty,
and other researchers find a place for quiet concentration and study
within our facilities. However, the library is also a dynamic resource
and university community center that offers a wide range of services,
materials, and environments. The library is a teaching space, where librarians
must talk to assist users in finding and understanding the information
resources the library provides. The technology provided by the library,
from computers and printers to video and photocopiers, inevitably also
produces noise.
We strive to find a balance among a variety of uses of library resources
while providing an environment that is conducive to study. Disturbances
or behaviors which interfere with the normal use of the library by others
are not acceptable. Examples of inappropriate behavior include rowdiness,
prolonged and/or loud conversations, use of radios, CD and other audio
players with a volume loud enough to disturb others, and noisy group
study in an open area. Several study rooms are available in the Science
Library for group study and conversation.
If you wish to report excessive noise, contact a library staff member
at the nearest service desk. We thank you for your cooperation in making
the UCI Libraries a better place to study and conduct research.
