What is CrossFire Gmelin?
Designed for Inorganic, Physical and Organometallic Chemists, CrossFire
Gmelin provides access to the most complete collection of structures,
properties and literature references in inorganic and organometallic
chemistry. CrossFire Gmelin is a computer-based gateway to the Gmelin
database, which allows you to search the most comprehensive electronically
searchable source of structures, properties and citations. Its coverage
includes data from the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic and Organometallic
Chemistry (1772-1975) and from most well respected inorganic, organometallic
and material science journals abstracted since 1975. CrossFire Gmelin
currently contains 1.4 million compounds, including:
- Coordination compounds
- Alloys
- Solid solutions
- Glasses and ceramics
- Polymers
- Minerals
CrossFire Gmelin's data structure contains over 800 different chemical
and physical property fields, a deep and detailed index of the original
literature. Broad categories of data found in the database include:
- Characterization, including material composition and structural data
- Chemical properties, including preparation and reaction details
- Electric, magnetic, mechanical, molecular and optical properties
- Electrochemistry
- Phase transition data
- Quantum chemical calculations
- Spectroscopy
- Systemic properties, such as solubility and vapor pressure in solution
- Thermodynamics
- Transport phenomena
- Thermal properties

In accordance with the University of California's licensing agreement,
access to CrossFire Gmelin is available to University of California,
Irvine faculty, students and staff, and to patrons visiting the UCI Science
Library Reference Room. There are no limits to the number of people who
can access the CrossFire Gmelin database at one time.
How to get the software to access
CrossFire Gmelin?
CrossFire's Gmelin client software "Commander" must first
be installed on your computer in order to use the Gmelin database. The
client software has already been installed on the Science Library computers
in the Science Library Reference area and the Interactive Learning Center
(ILC). Do not attempt to download the software in the Science Library.
To install Commander on a computer outside the library, follow the instructions
provided at the UCLA site: The Commander
software is updated regularly, and is available in both Windows and Macintosh
versions. (Note: CrossFire Commander is not yet available as a native
OS X application.)

CrossFire Commander software?
Instructions for installing the CrossFire searching software for UCI
faculty, students and staff:
- Go to the UCLA
Welcome to CrossFire Beilstein/Gmelin site, click on the MDL® CrossFire
Commander Download for Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows NT 4.0
SP6, Windows 2000 and Windows XP and Apple MacOS 9.2,OS X link.
Then click on the Irvine link for customized information for this
campus.
- Be sure to read the installation notes as there are more instructions
on proper settings contained in the notes. In order to install the
program you need to know the following:
- Host IP Address: cfd-a.beilstein.com
- License Group Name: uci
- User ID: uci001
- Password: m2dyv3
- If you have CrossFire versions older than Version 6, you will need
to uninstall the Commander software and install the newer version of
the Commander software.
- If you have Version 6, you must change the settings in CrossFire:
Under Options, choose
- 1) Connections - edit the default.orf file and change the
host server to cfd-a.beilstein.com
- 2) Change the Group Name to uci. When you connect, change
the user id and password to those listed above and Save the user
id/password so you don't have to re-enter them with each new
session.

Gmelin from within of outside the UC Irvine Libraries?
Access within the UC Irvine Libraries
CrossFire Gmelin is available to University of California, Irvine
faculty, students, staff and community users in the UC Irvine Science
Library at the following locations:
- The Reference Room on the 2nd Floor, public access computers (PCs
only). Click on the "Beilstein Command…" icon on
the computer desktop. When the CrossFire window opens, on the toolbar
at Database, click on the drop-down menu to "GMXXXX". You
will now be in CrossFire Gmelin.
- The Interactive Learning Center (ILC), 1st Floor (PCs and Macs
are
available). UCI faculty, students and staff may use ILC computers
during all hours the Science Library is open. On the computer desktop,
go to the Start menu, scroll up to Programs and click Commander.
Access from outside the UC Irvine Libraries
CrossFire Gmelin is also available to UCI Faculty students and staff
outside the UC Irvine Libraries as listed below. You must install the
Commander client software on your computer first. Follow the instructions
provided by the UCLA
site. There is no off-campus access to non-UC Irvine community
users.
- from a computer connected to the campus network
- via the UCI Lifeline Modem Service
- via ZotNet Internet Service
- via VPN Client Software
- CrossFire Gmelin is not available through the UCI Proxy Server.

Are there any tips or training materials on how to use the CrossFire
databases? Yes, we recommend:
Please note that chemical element searching in Gmelin is all lower-case-search,
for example to search silicon, search as "si," not Si.
