Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for the Academic Community
1. How does one gain access to Second Life (SL)?
One needs to register and create an avatar at http://www.secondlife.com/join/.
2. Do I need to be already familiar with Second Life to participate?
It helps to be familiar with the basic virtual reality environment of SL - this can be achieved by reviewing some of the videos at http://www.secondlife.com/community/media.php and visiting some of the spaces in SL.
Anyone who registers an avatar can visit; only those with permissions can build on a specific piece of property.
There are also a number of resources that UCI Libraries has organized to give one a better understanding about SL on the resources page.

Read the blogs, take the tutorials, read the books, attend some online conferences, spend time exploring SL and learning about virtual environments and contact others already engaged in SL.
