Taking Charge of Your Health: How to Find Reliable Health Information on the Web

Many of us are turning to the Internet for health information. Have you ever felt frustrated and overwhelmed trying to make sense of all the health information that can be found on the web? Have you wondered whether the information you found is reliable? This hands-on workshop will provide strategies for finding reliable health information on the web, as well as excellent pointers to trusted health information web sites. The instructor will also cover sites devote to pharmaceutical information for consumers, drug-interaction databases and herbal information. It will include tips for evaluating online information and provide resources to help you communicate with your healthcare providers.

Presenter:

Linda Suk-Ling Murphy, MLIS, Health Sciences Librarian at the University of California Irvine. Murphy has a Masters degree in Library Information Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.S. in Health Sciences: Community Health Education from San Jose State University. As the Health Sciences Librarian with a subspecialty in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), she has planned, developed, and implemented various workshops and seminars to enhance UCI faculty, residents, students, and staff skills in information literacy and competency and in the area of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM). Her research interests include health information literacy, culture competency, EBM, and information retrievals. She has authored and co-authored numerous of research papers in some of these areas.
