Academic authors have traditionally assigned perpetual rights to their articles
to publishers in return for publication of their works. Both authors and publishers
are now experimenting with alternative language that allows authors to retain
more control over their own intellectual property
Authors who wish to publish in scholarly journals are often asked to sign contracts
transferring perpetual rights, in whole or in part, to the publisher. Authors
who wish to retain non-exclusive copyrights may consider creating an addendum
to a publishers contract using one of the following texts:

(Adapted from the University of Kansas)
Notwithstanding the above language, I reserve the right to use this manuscript
in my teaching and research and subsequent works, for my colleagues and the
libraries at the University of California to use this manuscript in their teaching
and research, and library services. I also reserve the right to place an electronic
copy of this manuscript on a publicly accessible web site.

Negotiations with the publisher may be necessary to have the addendum accepted.
