Library Mobile Access: Wireless

The UC Irvine Libraries provide wireless network access to the Internet for UCI students, faculty and staff:

• Langson Library 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors, & Gateway Study Center
• Science Library 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th floor Drum, & Faculty and Graduate Reading Room
• Grunigen Medical Library at the UCI Medical Center in Orange, CA
• Libraries Gateway Study Center across from Langson Library

Wireless network access is provided as part of UCInet Mobile Access Service, a joint effort of the UCI Libraries and the Office of Information Technology (OIT). This service promotes wireless computing among students and faculty on campus for education and research.

The UC Irvine Libraries support UCInet Mobile Access Service by sponsoring a loan program that circulates laptops and wireless networking cards to UCI students and faculty. For more information see the OIT Mobile Access and wireless card registration pages.

To use wireless access to connect to the Internet, UCI students and faculty will need to:

• Have a laptop or mobile device with Wi-Fi (802.11b or 802.11g) capabilities either built-in or via an accessory card
• Determine the MAC address (usually on the back of the wireless card)
• Register the MAC address on the Office of Information Technology (OIT) Mobile Access Registration website using a UCInetID
• Be in a location that is a designated WIRELESS ACCESS ZONE (see Maps of Wireless Coverage)

• Laptops can be taken anywhere on campus; not limited to the Libraries or Study Centers
• Laptops with wireless capabilities are available for check-out at the
  
  • Multimedia Resources Center (MRC) 1st floor of the Langson Library, LL 123
  • Interactive Learning Center (ILC) 1st floor of the Science Library

• Laptops can be loaned for two hours at a time
• Borrowers will need a valid UCI Library Card, a 2nd picture ID, and a valid UCINetID

Assistance/Support:

• Assistance in the use of wireless technology provided in Multimedia Resources Center (MRC); Interactive Learning Center (ILC); and the Grunigen Medical Library's Information Technology Center (ITC).
• Assistance in use of network resources provided by the MRC, ILC, and ITC staffs and also by reference staffs at the Langson Library Reference Desk (1st floor); the Science Library Reference Desk (2nd floor); and the Grunigen Medical Library's Reference Desk
