Connect from Off-Campus

Remote access to the UCI Libraries' licensed online resources is available to current UC Irvine students, faculty & staff. In order to use these resources you must be "authenticated" (recognized as a valid user) by the UCI campus network.

For remote access
  • Your login/password is your UCINetID. To activate, click here.
  • For further assistance, call NACS at (949) 824-2222.
WebVPN - ( login)

Advantages

  • Works with many different Internet browsers.
  • Does not require you to download additional software.

Limitations

  • Web pages may load more slowly.
  • WebVPN will not access the following page(s):

    • http://www.science-of-synthesis.com/
Software VPN (download now)

** Select "UCI Full" when you run the VPN software.

Advantages

  • Use virtually any Internet browser (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer, Firefox), and most Internet connections.
  • Software VPN will also allow you to:

    • Access such non-web based online resources as Scifinder Scholar from off-campus.
    • Access the pages above that are inaccessible via the WebVPN.

Limitations

  • Requires download and installation of free client software.
  • Some home wireless networks may not be able to utilize the Software VPN.
  • Currently, the client software is only available for PC's using Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP, Mac OS X, and Linux.
The UCI LifeLine Modem Service

Advantages

  • Free.
  • In order to use the UCI LifeLine Modem Service, you will need to:

Limitations

  • During times of heavy use, it may take several attempts to connect to the LifeLine Modem Service.
  • This is a limited resource and it is not intended tfor more than modest needs. No Web browser proxy configuration is needed to use the UCI Libraries' licensed resources.
  • Connection time is limited both per session and by weekly usage.
  • The speed of your connection is limited to approximately 53K (53,000 bits per second).
