Suggestions for Successful Community College &
High School Student Visits
to the UC Irvine Libraries

The University of California, Irvine Libraries welcome everyone who wants to use our information and research resources, including high school, community college students and college students or faculty members from other institutions. All students and faculty are encouraged to determine if the resources available in their public and institutional libraries are sufficient to meet their research needs prior to visiting UC Irvine. In order to ensure that students have a rich and rewarding research experience when visiting the Libraries, high school teachers and community college instructors should prepare their students before they come to the Libraries by:

• Consulting with the Libraries’ Head of Education and Outreach on the purpose and design of the student’s research assignment.
• Working closely with the local community college/high school’s librarian/media resource specialist to determine what materials are available at the home institution library.
• Encouraging students to complete their initial research at their home institution or public library prior to visiting the UC Irvine Libraries.
• Requiring students to complete the UC Irvine Libraries Tutorial (http://tutorial.lib.uci.edu/) in preparation for their visit.

In designing library assignments that require students to use the resources of the UC Irvine Libraries, instructors should be aware of the following:

• It is the responsibility of the instructor to prepare the students for the visit. We have limited capacity to provide specialized instruction or orientations for non-UCI students.
• Tours and orientation sessions must be scheduled in advance and will be provided only as resources permit.
• Students should be prepared to pay fees for parking, photocopying and printing services and library cards.
