Join the UCI Great Big Read

 

Join the UCI Office of Inclusive Excellence, Libraries, and Division of Student Affairs to #ActForInclusion by exploring ideas that support diverse identities, challenge our perspectives, and connect us as a community of readers. 

All UCI students, faculty and staff to are invited to participate in the UCI Great Big Read, a project aimed at fostering engagement and social solidarity while practicing physical distancing. The books will focus on themes of inclusion and connection as ways to enhance openness to diverse perspectives.

To participate in the UCI Great Big Read, please register and receive the free links to the top-voted books for reading. The links will be included in your immediate confirmation information (with a copy of your responses sent to your UCI email). Access to the free book links is available only to UCI affiliates.

UCI Alumni and community members are invited to join. Please click here to register for the event. To obtain a copy of the books, check with your local public library or you may purchase copies at your local bookstore.

Join a fun-worthy virtual event to learn about the history of zines and to make your own inspired by Kindred.

Registration is required and those submitting RSVPs for this event will receive a list of supplies needed for zine making and zoom links to access the event.

SUPPLIES NEEDED – have the following supplies ready to fully enjoy this session:

  • 8 1/2 x 11 paper
  • pen or pencil
  • scissors
  • glue
  • Fun extras: markers, magazines or newspapers, stickers, patterned paper, fabric, washi tape, photos

UCI Great Big Read presents Julia Alvarez

The author of Afterlife and several novels, including How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, joins to discuss her themes of identity, family, hope and navigating cultural divides. A recipient of a National Medal of Art, Alvarez also has received a Hispanic Heritage Award in Literature and the F. Scott Fitzgerald Award for Outstanding Achievement in American Literature.
