The conference was co-sponsored by the A.M. Gorky Institute of World Literature, USSR, and the Modern Language Association, as a project of the US-USSR Commission on the Humanities and the Social Sciences of the American Council of Learned Societies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, administered in the United States by the International Research and Exchanges Board. Leading scholars discussed the role of literature in the formulation of values and the role of literary theory and criticism in the perception of literature.
