"A New Perspective on Applying Mathematics"

Abstract: "Three different philosophical approaches to explaining applications of mathematics are considered. My classification is based on what kind of relation an account requires between the subject matter of mathematics and the physical world in an application. I argue that an account in terms of mappings offers the most promise for understanding applications, and take these mappings to be intensional relations as opposed to sets."
