MRC Collections

The Multimedia Resources Center (MRC) houses the UCI Libraries' collection of non-print media in the arts, humanities, business and management, social sciences, and government information. The MRC is also the home of the UCI Libraries' science and medical collections of non-print media serving the needs of Biological Sciences, Engineering, Information and Computing Science, Physical Sciences, portions of Social Ecology, and the College of Medicine.

The UCI Libraries actively collects titles that support instruction and research for the academic programs at UCI. The collection consists of videocassettes, DVDs, laser discs, 16mm films, sound recordings, and CD-ROM titles, including data archive and government information titles.

To Check Out Materials

  • A valid UCI Libraries card is required
  • Selected MRC and U.S. Depository CD-ROMS may be checked out and used at the MRC with a valid library card, driver's license, passport, military ID, or other official state photo ID.

As of Fall 2015, up to 5 MRC media items (DVD videos, Videocassettes, etc.) may be checked out and renewed once by UCI faculty, staff and students with a valid UCI ID card in hand. All other borrowers may only view materials on-site. A valid library card is required for viewing privileges.

Films and videorecordings are loaned to UCI faculty members and graduate students for UCI classroom instruction, preview, or research. Videorecordings being previewed or used for research are subject to immediate recall if needed for classroom showing. Videorecordings and films are loaned to UCI staff for UCI classroom instruction only.

Due to copyright or purchase restrictions, films and videorecordings cannot be broadcast or electronically transmitted in any way, and they may not be used for group recreational or fund-raising programs. Please contact the MRC Manager with questions about showing films or videorecordings outside the classroom.

Classroom booking requests must be received at least three business days in advance. Specific booking dates for each item are required. This will protect your booking and accommodate multiple bookings for the same item when possible.

The borrower assumes responsibility for any lost or damaged media items. The appropriate subject bibliographer will determine actual replacement costs. Charges for lost or damaged non-print material will include a billing charge and processing costs if necessary.

Borrowers are responsible for the cost of repair or replacement of media while on loan from the MRC. Charges for lost or damaged media will include a minimum $125 replacement cost plus a $10 non-refundable processing fee and any overdue fines accrued to the borrowers account. Charges for lost or damaged equipment will include a $10 non-refundable processing fee, late fines and fees if applicable, plus repair or replacement costs up to $8,000 per item.

Fees must be paid by credit or debit card through My Library Account. After you log in to your account click "Pay Fine" next to Fine + Fees. You will be taken to a third party provider called TouchNet to enter your payment information.

The MRC does not loan equipment for use outside the UCI Libraries. The MRC equipment is for use with MRC and ILL materials only. Users who need media equipment for personal, departmental, or classroom use can contact Classroom Technology Support, which supplies media equipment to the campus.

As of Fall 2015, up to 5 MRC media items (DVD videos, Videocassettes, etc.) may be checked out and renewed once by UCI faculty, staff and students. UCI students must be enrolled in the current quarter or summer session to borrow materials.  All other borrowers may only view materials on-site. A valid library card is required for viewing privileges.

MRC Searches

Any borrower with a valid library card may fill out a search form for missing or in-process materials in the MRC collection at the MRC Desk.

MRC Recalls

UCI faculty members and graduate student instructors who need MRC media for specific classroom showings or class previews may complete a Media Use and Booking Form to place a recall on material that is checked out to another borrower, except:

  • Personal or departmental copies on Course Reserves
  • Materials being searched
  • In-process material
  • On order material

If an item is recalled, the new due date will be ten days from the date the recall was placed, unless the original due date is sooner.

Borrowers will be mailed or e-mailed a recall notice with the new due date and a courtesy overdue recall notice. Failure to receive recall and overdue notices does not exempt a borrower from fines or a lost MRC media bill. Home and e-mail addresses may be changed in Library Search or at any Check Out Desk.
