Libraries Awarded Japan Foundation Grant

The UCI Libraries have been awarded a prestigious grant by the Tokyo-based Japan Foundation under its overseas library support program to enhance our collection on Japanese film.

The books were selected by Acting Asian Studies Research Librarian Daniel Tsang, working closely with Jonathan Hall, Professor of Comparative Literature and Film & Media Studies, a specialist in Japanese cinema.

The grant of two million Yen (more than $17,000) enables the Libraries to enhance our holdings in Japanese cinema. The acquisitions also support the academic programs, enhancing UCI’s growing reputation as a major scholarly center in the United States for the study of Asian cinema. The books feature material relating to the emerging research field of Japanese avant-garde, independent, experimental, and colonial cinemas.

Established in 1972 by special legislation of the Japanese Diet, the Japan Foundation became an Independent Administrative Institution in October 2003. Its mission is to promote international cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries.
