Six Expert Librarians Join Staff

The Libraries have recruited six librarians to provide services in Asian studies, criminology and law, business and management, health sciences education, education and outreach, and cataloging of digital collections.

Ying Zhang is Research Librarian for Asian Studies, responsible for acquiring materials in East Asian languages. She will also provide liaison, instruction, and reference services to faculty and students in the Department of East Asian Languages and to those in other programs and departments who use materials in the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages.

Zhang comes to UCI with both excellent educational credentials and extensive employment and research experience. Since 2003 she has been East Asian Studies Library at Rutgers University, where she is also receiving her Ph.D. in library and information science this year. While at Rutgers she was a researcher on a variety of projects, most relating to digital libraries. Her bibliography of publications on digital library issues and Internet research resources is extensive. Zhang also served as senior research librarian and webmaster at Zhongshan University Libraries in Guangzhou, China. Her M.S. in Library and Information Studies is from Zhongshan University, and her B.S. in Marine Biology is from Ocean University of Qingdao, both in China.

Brian Williams is Research Librarian for Criminology, Law and Society, serving as the liaison to the School of Social Ecology's department of that name. As a member of the Langson Library Reference Department he also will be responsible for providing specialized and general reference service and will participate in the Libraries’ instruction program.

Williams’ experience with the law and legal collections is extensive. He has most recently been the specialist in foreign and international law at the University of San Diego Research Center. He also has worked in the law libraries of the University of Miami and St. Thomas University. He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan.

He has a J.D. degree from Wayne State University Law School and an M.S. in library science, also from Wayne State. His B.A. in liberal arts is from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Kristine Ferry is Research Librarian for Business, serving as liaison to the Merage School of Business. She will also provide specialized and general reference services as a member of the Langson Library Reference Department.

Ferry’s expertise in library technology will serve her well in her new position. Her most recent position was as Digital Resources Librarian at California State University at Los Angeles, before which she was Advanced Technologies Librarian at the highly-ranked Kresge Business Administration Library at the University of Michigan. She has also worked at the Thunderbird graduate school in Glendale, Arizona.

Her degrees include an M.S. in Information specializing in human-computer interaction from the University of Michigan, and a B.A. in French from the University of Windsor in Canada.

Pat Sarchet is Health Sciences Education Coordinator. She will serve as a resource to medical librarians and faculty seeking to incorporate informatics and evidence-based medicine into the curriculum, including modeling and integration of emerging and innovative teaching technologies.

Sarchet was previously at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she managed projects to develop multimedia tutorials for students, residents, and faculty in the health sciences. She is an experienced teacher; as an adjunct lecturer she taught anthropology courses at SUNY Brockport, as well as continuing education courses for the Medical Library Association. She also worked on Buffalo’s Integrated Advanced Information Management Systems initiative.

Her degrees include a Master’s in library science with a specialization in health sciences and a second Master’s in medical anthropology. She received a prestigious National Library of Medicine Fellowship to attend the highly-regarded medical informatics course at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Anne Bock is Research Librarian in the Department of Education and Outreach. Like all research librarians, she provides education, research consultation, collection development, and reference services. The Libraries will draw upon Bock’s extensive experience to strengthen the provision of information literacy instruction to students enrolled in lower-division writing courses.

Anne comes to us from Indiana University, where she was the librarian for Core Collections and Gender Studies. She earned her Master’s in library and information science from Simmons College in Boston, a B.A. in anthropology from UC Santa Cruz, and a Certificat de Langue française from the University of Paris.

Holly Tomren is Electronic Resources and Metadata Cataloger. She plays the lead role in our analysis and use of metadata to facilitate access to UCI’s rapidly expanding collection of digital resources, including books, journals, government documents, websites, and databases.

Tomren joins us from Pasadena City College, where she was the music cataloger with expertise in music sound recordings and videorecordings. She has also worked at the state-of-the-art Cerritos Public Library. She holds a Master’s degree in library and information studies from San Jose State University and a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies in Music and Comparative Literature from CSU Long Beach. With a minor in American Indian Studies, she is also is interested in access to American Indian collections and tribal libraries and has worked with the California State Library to train tribal librarians.
