MELVYL® Grows up

On June 24, 2011, a new version of Melvyl (uci.worldcat.org/) was introduced. In addition to identifying books, journals, films, and databases held by other UC Libraries, Melvyl now includes holdings from around the world and provides the ability to discover and access individual articles, locate e-books in repositories like HathiTrust, and access material in CDL's eScholarship repository.  UCI's locally licensed databases and e-books are also findable in Melvyl (over 3,000 locally licensed e-books were added in 2011-2012).

In Melvyl you can choose to scope your searches to materials held in the UC Libraries, worldwide libraries, or the UCI Libraries. Results display based on relevancy, and then you can refine your search with faceted browsing.  With facets you can focus on specific attributes that better describe the type of material you are looking for. Using facets can narrow the results to a specific author, a publication year, a format (book, film, article), language, or topic.

To request materials not held by the UCI Libraries, continue to use Request in Melvyl.  To save time use your browser's Autofill feature to automatically fill in your Library Card/Account Number and email address. The Request service auto-detects your IP address and displays the appropriate home campus form.

Melvyl also provides easy access to a variety of related information that has not traditionally been collated in library catalogs, including an author's publication timeline, how many libraries own the author's works, and links to other information.

FAQs about Melvyl are available at www.cdlib.org/services/d2d/melvyl/Melvyl_FAQ.html. To provide feedback and suggestions to improve Melvyl click on the WorldCat: Feedback link available at the bottom of any Melvyl page.
