New Head of Special Collections, Archives, and Digital Scholarship: Michelle Light

Michelle Light has recently been appointed the Head of Special Collections, Archives, and Digital Scholarship.  Special Collections and Archives houses the UC Irvine Libraries' collections of rare books, manuscripts, archives, photographs, and other rare and special materials. In addition to managing the department, Michelle also chairs the Digital Scholarship Team, which helps UC Irvine faculty publish, share, and preserve the digital products of research.  She is an expert in archival description, documentation planning, and digital records.  Michelle joined the UC Irvine Libraries in January 2007 as an archivist.  Previously, she worked at the University of Washington, Northeastern University, and Yale University. She has an M.S. in Information and an M.A. in History from the University of Michigan.  Her record of professional accomplishment includes publications, conference papers, and active leadership in the Society of American Archivists, including serving on the editorial board of the American Archivist.

New Scholarly Communications Coordinator: Mitchell Brown

The UCI Libraries is happy to announce that Mitchell Brown, Research Librarian for Chemistry, Earth System Science, and Russian Studies, has been appointed the UCI Libraries Scholarly Communication Coordinator. The new position will coordinate scholarly communication activities on the UC Irvine campus and be involved with projects at the University of California systemwide level.

Mitchell will coordinate activities of SCAMP – the UCI Libraries Scholarly Communication and Management Program – to highlight and help the university capture its research output, expand access to and increase the impact of its faculties' scholarship, and engage publishers in practical, mutually beneficial ways to evolve copyright sharing and business practices.  As a member of the UC Scholarly Communications Officers group, Mitchell will serve as the campus contact for eScholarship and participate in UC systemwide scholarly communication issues.
 
Mitchell joined the UCI Libraries in 2005. Previously he worked at Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge and Princeton University. He has a B.S. in Physics from Carnegie-Mellon, and a M.S. in Information Science from the University of Texas, Austin.  He works with the UC Irvine physical sciences faculty to manage scientific library collections and incorporate research skills in chemistry instruction.  The appointment of Mitchell Brown as the scholarly Communications Coordinator reinforces the Libraries' continued commitment to hiring talented librarians who develop the collections and services that support UCI faculty and students' research.

New Head of Access Services: Kristine Ferry

Kristine Ferry became Head of Access Services in July 2011 after serving in this position on an interim basis for one year.  Access Services is the department that delivers front-line services to the Libraries’ patrons at check out desks, media centers, interlibrary loan and document delivery services, reserve services, and management of the library stacks at the Langson and Ayala Science libraries.  Visitors to our facilities have more contact with Access Services than any other library department and Kristine is an advocate for excellent service. 

Kristine initially joined the staff in the fall of 2006 as Business Librarian and then became Director of Web Services in 2008.  She holds an M.S. degree in Information from the University of Michigan. Her B.A. is in French from the University of Windsor, Canada.
