Étienne Balibar papers
Étienne Balibar, Distinguished Professor of French & Italian and Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine, recently donated his professional papers to the UCI Libraries' Critical Theory Archive. A student of Louis Althusser, Balibar is best known as a Marxist philosopher and political theorist focused on historical materialism, critical theory, ethics, and political philosophy. His works include Lire le Capital (with Louis Althusser, Pierre Macherey, Jacques Rancière, Roger Establet, and F. Maspero) (1965); Spinoza et la politique (1985); Nous, citoyens d'Europe? Les frontières, l'État, le peuple (2001); Politics and the Other Scene (2002); L'Europe, l'Amérique, la Guerre. Réflexions sur la mediation européenne (2003); Europe, Constitution, Frontière (2005). Donated papers include draft writings, notes, and lectures documenting his work with Althusser in the 1960s, his affiliation with the French Communist Party, and his thoughts on Baruch Spinoza, René Descartes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Irene Saltern Salinger papers

Recently donated by her family, the Irene Saltern Salinger papers are a treasure trove for fashion historians. Salinger was a Hollywood fashion designer in the late 1930s to early 1940s, an originator of coordinated women's sportswear separates in the 1950s, and a fashion designer into the late 1970s. Salinger's papers from her Hollywood career include many costume sketches for Hollywood films, such as Saboteur, Miss Polly, They Dare Not Love, So Ends Our Night, Time Out for Rhythm, The Howards of Virginia, Tanks a Million, Cheers for Miss Bishop, All-American Co-Ed, The Westerner, and Raffles. Documentation of her commercial work includes sketches, photographs, fabric swatches, and advertisements for companies such as Tabak, Phil Rose, Irene Saltern, Sir James, Lanz-Alexa/Tonino, FigureMate, Pant Pouri (Lady R), and City Girl. The collection also includes a small number of European fashion plates showing popular clothing for upper-class men, women, and children from the mid- to late-nineteenth century.

Friends of the Newport Coast records
The Friends of the Newport Coast, established in 1976 as the Friends of the Irvine Coast, was an environmental organization dedicated to preserving and protecting open space and wildlife habitat on the Newport Coast in Orange County, California, for public use and enjoyment. After disbanding in 2011, the group donated newsletters, legal documents, correspondence, clippings, minutes, pamphlets, and reports to the UCI Libraries.

Walter Richardson papers

Walter Richardson, founding partner of the architecture and planning firm, Richardson, Nagy, Martin, recently donated his professional papers documenting housing projects in Orange County. Included are schematic drawings, floor plans, site plans, photographs, color slides, and brochures.
