2012 Archival Research Awards Announced and 2013 Applications Open

The UCI Libraries has recently awarded two Archival Research Fellowship Awards to Rebecca Huey and Jennifer Henry. The $500 awards are given to students who submit a completed research paper that was based on extensive archival research in Special Collections and Archives. The papers will be published in the UCI Libraries' instance of eScholarship (http://escholarship.org/uc/uci_libs), in a new series titled Archival Research Fellowship Papers.

Rebecca HueyRebecca Huey, a second-year undergraduate student at UCI, submitted the paper, "Protest in Practice: The University of California, Irvine's Place in the Anti-Vietnam War Movement from 1965 to 1970." Completed for Humanities Core 1C (Spring 2012, Instructor Christine Eubank), Huey's paper explores the tactics of resistance employed by students and faculty at several college campus during the anti-Vietnam War movement. It focuses on the uniquely peaceful and open character of the protests that took place on the UCI campus. Rebecca is originally from Torrance, CA and enjoys cross-country running and playing soccer in her free time.

Jennifer HenryJennifer Henry, a third-year law school student at UCI, submitted the paper "The Private City: Irvine (Company), California." Completed for American Legal History (Spring 2012, Professor Christopher Tomlins), Henry's paper describes privatization of land use regulation in Irvine, California, as a descendent of the technique of using private companies to undertake the government function of colonization. She holds a B.A. in International Studies from Macalester College, awarded cum laude.

The UCI Libraries will offer two $500 research awards in 2013, as well. The deadline for applications is Friday, June 14, 2013. More information about the 2013 awards is available here (http://special.lib.uci.edu/services/award.html).
