Accessing Scholarly Publications from China

Are you looking for recent scholarly publications and resources from China? If so, try Chinese Studies Online (CSO) (http://www.wanfangdata.com/uc_db.asp), an online database which provides Chinese journal articles (1997- ), conference papers (1986- ), dissertations (1986- ), policies and regulations, and business directories. What makes CSO unique compared with other Chinese online databases is the English language interface, wide range of subject coverage, and diversified resource types. With the English language interface, you can enter search words in English and retrieve publications with English citations.

csoWhile the majority of CSO contents are in Chinese, a small number of English language journals and conference proceedings are accessible as well. Selected titles include: Science China (Information Sciences), Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Journal of Chinese Pharmaceutical Sciences, Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, and Proceeding of the International Conference on Chemicals Risk Assessment of Environmental Hazard and Human Health.

In addition to CSO, the Libraries have subscribed to other databases that are searchable in English for Chinese research publications, including:

  • Duxiu features millions of digitized copies of monograhs
  • China Academic Journals provides broader publication date coverage than the China Online Journals in CSO and access to the first issues of many journal titles; some dated back to 1915. At this time, the Libraries' subscription only covers humanities and social sciences.
  • Wisenews provides access to hundreds of English and Chinese newspapers published primarily in the greater China area.

More Chinese databases are available from the Asian Studies Subject Guide (http://libguides.lib.uci.edu/asian_studies).
