We are delighted to announce the appointment of Lorelei Tanji as University Librarian, effective October 1, 2012. As Interim University Librarian since April 2011, Tanji made significant strides in advancing the mission of the UCI Libraries.

Annette BuckleyAnnette Buckley has been appointed the Research Librarian for Business. Within her first few months at the UCI Libraries, she has become involved in several team efforts, including a task force creating a new capture/search interface for faculty interview data.

Prior to joining the UCI Libraries in July 2012, Annette worked as the Business Reference Graduate Research Assistant in the Perry-Castañeda Library at the University of Texas, Austin. Two of her major projects during graduate school included a survey of the business database holdings at top research universities, and a group-created website called "The Realia Collections," a database describing the physical object collections available throughout UT Austin. Annette's degrees include an M.S. in Information Studies from UT Austin, and a B.A. in Communications and English from Trinity University.

New Appointments in the UCI LibrariesBethany Harris

Bethany Harris started her position as Research Librarian for the Health Sciences in August 2012. Her focus is selecting books and other materials for Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. She is working closely with the current Health Sciences Librarians, Steve Clancy and Linda Murphy, meeting with faculty, and building the collection.

Ms. Harris received an M.S. in Information from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Kansas. While completing her master's degree, she worked as a University Library Associate at Taubman Health Sciences Library, where she provided instruction and reference services and participated in an inter-departmental chemical informatics research team.

Over the last year, Bethany has been a National Library of Medicine (NLM) Associate Fellow. She has been working on projects that include researching best practices for creating digital training on environmental health and toxicology resources; analyzing consumer health questions to create a taxonomy for new question-answering technology; and investigating and annotating mutation nomenclature to aid in the development of a novel mutation text mining tool.

Shu LiuShu Liu joined the UC Irvine Libraries in June 2012 as Metadata and Digital Resources Librarian. Shu will lead and advise the Libraries' efforts in planning, implementation, and assessment of metadata schema used to describe and access UCI's increasingly rich array of electronic and digital resources. Shu will serve as the metadata expert on the Libraries' Digital Scholarship Service Team and will be coordinating metadata development activities for a variety of digital projects, including the University's 50th anniversary celebration. Shu will also participate in systemwide digital projects at the University of California.

Shu comes to UCI after seven successful years at Colorado State University, Fort Collins. As Digital Content Librarian, she developed expertise with a variety of metadata schema and provided leadership in the development and use of metadata for the university's digital repository. Shu has an M.L.I.S from the University of British Columbia and a B.A. from Beijing University, where she majored in information management. She has authored several articles published in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at a number of national conferences. Shu is committed to a user-centered approach to accessing library resources. Her current professional interests include open access, digital repositories, data curation, and digital preservation.
