New Electronic Resources!
Cell Press Journals

The UCI Libraries have achieved another milestone in electronic access to scientific journals. With the licensing of Cell, Developmental Cell, Immunity, Molecular Cell, Neuron, and Cancer Cell, we now provide online access to the entire Cell Press family of titles. The online archive of each journal goes back to 1996, or to the first issue for those that began publication since that date.

Gaining electronic access to the Cell Press journals, and above all the title Cell, has been a top priority for faculty in Biological Sciences and the College of Medicine ever since online editions first became available in 2001. Cell, for example, is considered one of the top five journals in cell biology; each article is cited an average of 27 times within the first two years after publication.

Why did it take three years to license the online editions of such significant journals? As with our heavily publicized recent negotiations with Elsevier, the UC libraries, through the California Digital Library, worked long and hard to negotiate an acceptable price for a UC-wide license. Ultimately, the success of these negotiations yielded substantial savings to each campus. Only through successfully applying such consortial pressure can the libraries of UC and other research universities cap price inflation and help limit cancellations of journal subscriptions.
