Interim University Librarian Appointed

The UC Irvine Libraries are pleased to announce the appointment of Lorelei Tanji as Interim University Librarian. Tanji assumes this role after the retirement of former Interim University Librarian Gerald R. Lowell. Tanji has served as Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Collections since 2002.

"I am honored to serve as Interim University Librarian, and look forward to the exciting challenges and opportunities ahead" said Tanji. "The Libraries' employees are innovative and creative people dedicated to providing user-centered services and high-priority resources that support UC Irvine's research and teaching mission. I respect and appreciate their hard work, and the support of campus leadership as we work collaboratively to ensure a library of excellence for the campus and community."

Ms. Tanji joined UC Irvine in 1990 as Fine Arts Librarian. As AUL for Collections, she has been responsible for the management of over 3.2 million volumes and 78,000+ journals in electronic and print formats, as well as a myriad of manuscripts, microforms, maps, data, and digital collections held in Langson Library, Ayala Science Library, and Grunigen Medical Library. She has also long been part of the Library's senior administrative team dealing with library-wide strategic planning and policy decision-making, provides leadership for participation in UC collaborative collection development activities, and represents the Libraries in a wide range of campus, University, regional and national bodies. Ms. Tanji holds an M.L.S. in Library & Information Science and an M.A. in Music from UCLA. She also holds a B.A. in Music from U.C. Davis.
