UCI Libraries' Phased Reopening Plans

The UCI Libraries are implementing a phased reopening plan to support research and instruction.

We have received approval to move from Phase 1 to Phase 2a.  Dates for movement to future phases are unknown and will be in alignment with campus and public health guidance.

  • Phase 1: Buildings Closed, staff working remotely (Mid-March through early July)

  • Phase 2 – July/August

    • Approved: July 20 - Some library staff return to prepare for Phase 2. Patrons can start making requests for books during the week of July 27 for pick-up during the week of August 3.

    • Approved: August 3 (Phase 2a): Start paging/pick-up services for library materials at Langson Library front door or curbside in Lot 2 (Science Library, OC&SEAA, and select MRC materials may also be picked up at Langson). Start limited reference and digitization services for Special Collections and Archives. NOTE:  The library buildings remain closed to the public; pickup services by appointment occur outdoors.  

    • Approved: October 1 (Phase 2b): Libraries Gateway Study Center and Multimedia Resources Centers (at Science Library) will be open for studying. Limited study space will be available by appointment to current UC students, faculty, and staff only. More information coming soon.

  • Phase 3 – (Dates TBD – based on campus guidance)

    • Phase 3a:

      • Open limited study space in main library buildings in preparation for fall quarter.

      • Closed Stacks. HathiTrust ETAS  materials available online. Non-HathiTrust ETAS items available for paging/pick-up in library buildings and curbside.

    • Phase 3b:

      • Additional study seats added spaces opened for study.

    • Phase 3c:  This phase will likely not happen until remote instruction ends.

      • Open Stacks.

      • All study spaces reopened.
