Obituary.
Anonymous. "Sir Geoffrey Warnock." [Obituary] Times
of London (October 12, 1995):23.
"He was a member of that
group of young Oxford philosophers who were greatly influenced in
the immediate postwar years by the work of J.L. Austin, and one of
the services he performed to the memory of that remarkable man was
to reconstruct, from fragmentary manuscript notes a convincingly
characteristic text (published in 1962) of the lectures which the
latter regularly gave under the title Sense and Sensiblia."

On John Searle.
"The principal means of doing philosophy
at
Oxford was through discourse...Isaiah Berlin...regarded as one of
history's great talkers...'would give 20-minute disquisitions'...John
Austin was the opposite, seizing on the smallest thing, and attacking."

"On the Death of an Oxford Philosopher"
"He did not die voluntarily,
But then,as he would have pointed out himself,
Not involuntarily either.
The Chinese sage's astonishment
At seeing a book bound in human skin
Would have been tenfold had he watched
Such games and rituals of precision
As are this philosopher's epitaph,
For he bound dictionaries not with his skin,
but his life.
Words, which fell correctly from his mouth,
Objects, which he ordered with his breath,
Are they woefully disarranged by this slow
death?
A name no longer has a bearer,
A sentence that was true is false,
Yet something lives.
Distinctions which he drew are his survivors,
We utter his and our performatives."

"During my Bletchley days, I had
occasionally meetings with senior American officers, and I have not
forgotten one such: when J.L. Austin, the philosopher, was called to
describe in front of Eisenhower and others the slope of the Normandy
beaches. Austin was an austere figure. He wore fierce little spectacles;
he dressed only in issue uniform, eschewing the more comfortable shoe or
shirt in favour of an army hand-me-down. He spoke unsmiling and to the
point. When he had done so a Lieutenant-General questioned his judgement.
Was he absolutely sure he was accurate about the slope of the beaches at
Arromanches? He stiffened. After all, he was a Professor of Moral
Philosophy. In a thin voice he replied, 'The trouble with you senior
officers is always the same. It is not that you will try to run before you
can walk. You will try to walk before you can stand.'"
