Group Study Rooms Now Available at Libraries Gateway

The use of the Libraries Gateway Study Center has dramatically increased since its first phase of upgrades during a summer-long renovation in 2008. Phase 2 of the renovation project is now complete and has resulted in the construction of 13 new study rooms accommodating 2 to 6 people per room. In addition, comfortable seating and study tables have been placed throughout the remaining space. With natural light and a vista to Aldrich Park, the increased seating has made this a welcomed study option for students. To ease overcrowding in Langson Library, the 1st floor of LGSC was cleared and stacks erected to create a collections “annex.”

Since the completion of Phase 1, students have made use of the space by studying at the many new carrels, tables, and soft seating located throughout the 2nd floor. Updates included repaired walls, new carpeting, new paint, and a complete renovation of the original wood panel wall. The technology received a necessary upgrade as well. 90 new computers were installed with 19-inch flat panel monitors and high-speed Wi-Fi routers offering wireless Internet to students.

The newly redesigned space in the Libraries Gateway Study Center is the culmination of years of collaborative planning between library staff, the architectural firm, Gruen Associates, and campus Project Management. As with all our space planning initiatives, this project is being funded with one-time savings.

Due to severe budgetary constraints the Libraries have significantly slowed down on much-needed Library space projects. If you have any questions about the LGSC or any University Library facility, please contact Bruce Bromberger, Director of Space Planning and Facilities (bbromber@uci.edu or x43981).
