Springer eBooks
The UC Libraries have implemented an exciting and groundbreaking pilot agreement with Springer, a premier scientific, technology, and medical publisher, in obtaining perpetual access to over 20,000 Springer eBooks.
The Springer licensed eBook collection includes titles in English and German from a wide range of disciplines/categories: Architecture and Design, Behavioral Science, Biomedical and Life Sciences, Business and Economics, Chemistry and Materials Science, Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences and Law, Mathematics and Statistics, Medicine, Physics and Astronomy, and Professional and Applied Computing. Included in the collection is Landolt-Bornstein, the largest compilation of data in physics and chemistry. The pilot includes imprints from 2005 through 2009.
This pilot project offers tremendous flexibility to users in how to find and utilize econtent. Titles can be searched or browsed directly on the SpringerLink Platform (www.springerlink.com), an interface familiar to users of our subscribed journal content on SpringerLink. Linked access to the eBooks is provided through ANTPAC, Melvyl, UC-eLinks and Google Scholar. Each eBook chapter is available as a separate PDF file without digital rights management (DRM). These files can be downloaded, printed, or sent to a smartphone or Kindle.
Users may also order a print copy of an available eBook via Springer’s print on demand service called MyCopy. Users may purchase a digitally printed version of an eBook (a colored soft cover with a black-and-white interior) and have it shipped directly to their home address at a charge of $24.95 per copy. Currently, about 11,000 eBook titles, beginning with copyright year 2005, are available to the MyCopy service.
Shared UC print copies of all included eBooks beginning with 2009 imprints have been incorporated into the pilot package and reside at UC Merced. These copies circulate and are available for loan to other UC campuses and non-UC institutions. Requests for shared print copies also are handled through the standard ILL process. Interlibrary loan of Springer eBooks to non-UC libraries is also permitted.
