UCI’s Michelle Latiolais Featured in Literary Luncheon
Professor Michelle Latiolais spoke about her novel, A Proper Knowledge, at the Libraries’ annual Literary Luncheon on Feb. 24. Latiolais is Professor of English at UCI, where she co-directs the highly acclaimed Programs in Writing while also finding time to craft her own stories.
A Proper Knowledge is about a psychiatrist who specializes in treating autistic children with high intelligence levels. It is a love story that draws parallels between how psychiatrists and lovers learn the minds of others. Latiolais talked about the process of writing the novel, how she became fascinated by autism, and how impaired minds work and communicate within themselves. Guests had the opportunity to ask questions and have their books signed by the author.
Latiolais is the author of numerous short stories, published most recently in Western Humanities Review and Green Mountains Review; her first novel, Even Now, won the Gold Medal for Fiction from the Commonwealth Club of California.
Hosted by library supporter Doreen Hamburger for the past five years, the Libraries’ popular literary luncheon features authors in an intimate setting sharing insights about their work with community members.
