East Asian Collection Receives Significant Grant and Donation

The Libraries’ East Asian Collection, located on the first floor of Langson Library, has received a special grant for Taiwan research materials from the Ministry of Education (MOE), Taiwan, and an additional gift of research materials from the Korea Foundation under its new program, "Distribution by Request."

The MOE grant of over 1.1 million TWD (approximately 35,000 USD), received through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles, will support the growth of a core collection for a new research area in modern Taiwan literature and cinema. Ying Zhang, Asian Studies Librarian, will develop the collection in collaboration with Bert Scruggs, a specialist in postcolonial Taiwan literature research. The collection will cover print and electronic books, journals, newspapers, and visual materials. UC Irvine is the second UC campus to receive the MOE special library grant; the previous recipient was the Center for Taiwan Studies at UC Santa Barbara, along with their libraries.

While the MOE grant enables the Libraries to develop a new collection for Taiwan studies, the new Korea Foundation book donation program provides flexibility in Korean material acquisitions. Under this new program, the Libraries will create wishlists and, when needed, request pertinent Korean research materials.

Since 1992, the East Asian Collection has been enriched with 2,350 volumes of gift books chosen from the Korea Foundation’s annual selection list by former and current Asian Studies librarians. Both the "Regular Distribution" and "Distribution by Request" programs enhance the Korean collection in the areas of literature, history, culture, and cinema. With continued support from the Korea Foundation, the Libraries’ Korean collection has grown from zero in 1990 to nearly 16,000 volumes, making it the third largest in the UC system. The collection is heavily used by Korean studies faculty and students at UCI and beyond.

Library Campaign on the Web

As UCI’s $1 billion "Shaping the Future" comprehensive campaign builds momentum across campus, the Libraries have launched a new website to highlight our campaign fundraising priorities and the important role the Libraries play in support of the university’s effort to broaden its teaching, research, and public service for the people of California and beyond.

As the foundation of UCI’s intellectual strength and innovation, the Libraries are a catalyst for advancing new knowledge in all academic disciplines. The success of the university and surrounding community is integrally tied to the strength of the Libraries. The Campaign for the Libraries seeks to enhance our collections, services, and outreach programs; grow our staff and facilities; and expand our information technology infrastructure.

The new website describes the Libraries’ priorities in more detail, offers opportunities to support the campaign, and provides important news and information as the campaign progresses through 2015.

To access the site, go to partners.lib.uci.edu and click on Campaign for the Libraries. For more information, contact Jenny Oenning, Director of Development (jenny.oenning@uci.edu or x49339).
