Beginning late this month, you can simultaneously query ANTPAC, Melvyl, and a broader global universe of more than 80 million bibliographic records with a single online search. We encourage you to test the beta version of this “Next Generation Melvyl” from the search box on the UCI Libraries’ homepage and send in your comments.
Similar to the way in which Google enables broad, inclusive searches, allowing scholars to cast a wide net, the new catalog provides single-search access not only to materials at UCI, other UC campuses, and the University’s two regional storage facilities, but to millions more that are available via interlibrary loan from other research universities. UCI holdings display first, followed by those at other UCs. Users also have the option of limiting searches to UCI or UC-wide holdings.
Much of the functionality of the current Melvyl is preserved, such as the ability to determine an item’s location and circulation status, to request it on interlibrary loan, and to compile lists of search results. New features abound as well, including searching in multiple languages, display of book jacket covers, transfer of references into EndNote or RefWorks, and links to reviews on Amazon.com. You can also search 30 million articles, as well as books.
Each UC campus is piloting its own version of the catalog through the end of 2008. The database on which it is based is OCLC Worldcat, an international bibliographic database that includes a selection of journal articles in addition to the usual variety of materials (books, journal, audiovisual materials, archives, etc.).
User testing for the system-wide pilot will occur at both UC Irvine and UC Berkeley during the spring and fall of 2008. Both ANTPAC and the current Melvyl catalog will be maintained and fully functional throughout the pilot project.
