Anteater Antics and New & Noteworthy Collections: Two New Blogs from Special Collections and Archives

Are you or your students interested in UCI history? Have you ever wondered where the Anteater mascot came from? Did architect William Pereira have ideas for the central park that were never realized? Did UCI really host a month-long festival on Marcel Duchamp in the early 1970s? What did President Lyndon Johnson actually say in his speech at the UCI site dedication in 1964? Was there really a major demonstration on this campus after Clark Kerr was fired as UC President in January 1967?

Anteater Antics is a blog designed by Special Collections and Archives to share informal, interesting, and fun stories about UCI history. The blog showcases a variety of interesting (and occasionally obscure) items from the archival collections in Special Collections and Archives. Some of these items are accompanied by short, engaging stories about the university -- stories that you or your students might not have otherwise heard or read about.

Topics covered thus far include the story of the original 1965 student election that determined the anteater as the UCI mascot; photographs of and plans for the Arts Plaza designed by Maya Lin; details of architect William Pereira's early campus plans and some aspects of the plans that were never implemented; photographs of Ansel Adams taking photographs of the campus as part of the UC centennial celebration that took place in 1968; documents and photographs from the student organization Project Ngoc in the 1980s and 1990s; photographs and posters from the speech Eldridge Cleaver gave in 1968; and photographs of the making of various films on the UCI campus, including Silent Movie and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. There is even an interview with Schuyler Hadley Bassett III, one of the students who spearheaded the successful campaign that resulted in the anteater mascot election.

New and Noteworthy Collections introduces new archival and manuscript collections, as well as new books and serials of note, from our collections.
