Science Library Upgrades
Many changes are taking place in the UCI Libraries, the most visible being the upgrade to the Science Library Grand Reading Room (GRR). Over the summer, the GRR received a much-needed facelift and lighting retrofit. The university had planned to replace the original stadium lighting in the room with high efficiency lighting and the libraries took the opportunity to replace carpet, repaint the walls and pillars, and shift microform collections and readers from the first and second floors of the Langson Library into that space.
The 32 high-watt stadium lights that were an original design feature of the Sterling-designed library were replaced with 13 rings of energy efficient lights. The new lights evenly distribute lighting throughout the popular reading, research, and study space and the new carpet and fresh paint provide a welcoming atmosphere.
In an effort to relieve overcrowding in the Langson Library, all microform collections have been consolidated and moved into the GRR. The analog and digital readers needed to view and copy the materials were also moved. The reference collection and current periodicals collection have both been condensed and shifted to better utilize the space.
To improve services to users, the reference desk has been relocated so that it is visible as soon as users enter the second floor landing. The copy desk where users can get assistance with microform reader/printers and copy machines has been relocated to the south side of the floor.
