Bob Johnson: a Rising Star

The UCI Libraries is happy to announce that Bob Johnson, research librarian for nursing and allied health, was selected as one of only four emerging medical librarian leaders to participate in the Medical Library Association's Rising Stars pilot. The Medical Library Association (MLA) is a professional organization for medical and health librarians in all types of libraries and with members from 43 countries.

The MLA developed its Rising Stars initiative to identify emerging leaders within medical librarianship and promote leadership in the medical library community. The pilot program focuses on bringing librarians into positions of leadership early in their careers and engaging them in decisions that will affect the future of the MLA. Bob Johnson has been matched with an experienced medical librarian as a mentor who serves on the MLA Board (Rikke Ogawa at UCLA's Louise M. Darling Medical Library). Bob's project is to plan programming for the MLA 2011 Annual Meeting. Bob and his mentor will identify broad topics of general interest to encourage member participation in MLA programs. Bob will partner with MLA Sections and Special Interest Groups to sponsor these programs and coordinate the program planning process for these broad topics.

Bob joined the UCI Libraries in 2007 as the librarian for nursing and allied health and has become an integral part of the Libraries. In addition to working with the nursing faculty to incorporate research skills into the nursing curriculum, Bob is a popular and effective instructor in teaching the Libraries' instructional sessions for W39C and Humanities Core. He works closely with the medical bibliographer to evaluate resources and he is the current leader of the Engineering, Medicine and Sciences bibliographers group at UCI. He is also active in the local chapter of the MLA (Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona) as the current chair of the Public Relations Committee and has served as a member of the Newsletter Committee.

The MLA's recognition of Bob Johnson as an emerging leader within the medical librarianship profession attests to the Libraries' continued commitment to hiring talented librarians who develop the collections and services that support UCI faculty and students' research.
