Official Rules - Student Library Video Contest

Eligibility:

Any University of California, Irvine Undergraduate or Graduate student is eligible to submit an entry into the Student Library Video Contest. Students must have a working UCInetID and will be required to show proof of enrollment.

How to Enter: 

Beginning 12:00:01 a.m. Pacific Time on December 1, 2016 and ending at 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time on February 7, 2017 (“Contest Period”), you can enter the contest by following the instructions on the Student Library Video Contest website to upload a 2 min video about how the UCI Libraries can help a new student succeed.

Complete and submit an entry form between December 1, 2016 and February 7, 2017 to enter the contest. Once you have entered the contest, we will provide you a link to upload your 2 min video. 

Submissions must be in English only. The UCI Libraries reserve the right to allow for minor fluctuations between the Submission length limitation stated herein and the actual length of a Submission submitted in this Contest, as well as other minor deviations, based on clear intent to comply with these Official Rules, as determined by the UCI Libraries in its sole discretion.  Limit one (1) Submission per person/UCInetID for the entire contest period.  Any attempt by any person to obtain more than the stated number of entries by using multiple UCInetIDs or any other methods will void all of that person’s entries and that person will be disqualified. 

Submission Requirements/Restrictions:

By submitting a Submission, each entrant warrants that it is an original Submission created by the entrant); and (ii) grants the UCI Libraries and its designees the perpetual, unlimited, nonexclusive, transferable, worldwide and irrevocable right to modify, create derivative works of, edit, post, publish and/or otherwise use the Submission and all elements embodied therein, including any names and likenesses, in any manner and in any and all media now known or hereafter developed, without further compensation, notification or permission. 

To be eligible, a Submission must:

(1) be entrant’s own original work that has not been submitted to any other third party, including any other contest

(2) be a .wmv, .mov, .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .mp4, .asf, .3gp or a .3g2 format;

(3) be no more than 2 minutes in total runtime;

(4) be owned by entrant;

(5) be nonconfidential;

(6) have been legally created; and

(7) if the video includes other individuals or was filmed by an individual other than entrant, they (or, if minors, their parents or legal guardians) must provide permission to the entrant to submit the Submission in the Contest.

The UCI Libraries reserves the right to require proof of permissions in a form acceptable to the UCI Libraries.  Failure to provide such proof may result in disqualification. Submissions that do not meet the submission criteria set forth above, contain prohibited content, and/or are otherwise deemed by the UCI Libraries, in its sole discretion, to be inappropriate or obscene or not in keeping with the UCI Libraries’ image will be disqualified and will not appear on the Web Site for public voting.

Submission may not contain, as determined by the the UCI Libraries, in its sole discretion, any content that:

• promotes use of the UCI Libraries in an off manner or makes any mention of any adverse event related to the UCI Libraries;

• makes any claim about the UCI Libraries’ or otherwise, that cannot be substantiated;

• is sexually explicit, obscene or suggestive; unnecessarily violent or derogatory of any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional or age group; profane or pornographic; or contains nudity;

• promotes alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms/weapons (or the use of any of the foregoing); promotes any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous; promotes any particular political agenda or message;

• appears to duplicate any other submitted Entries;  

• defames, misrepresents or contains disparaging remarks about other people or companies or the UCI Libraries, its products or services;

• contains trademarks, logos, or trade dress (such as distinctive packaging or building exteriors/interiors) owned by others, without permission to the extent permission is necessary; 

• contains any personal identification, such as license plate numbers, personal names, email addresses or street addresses or other personal information;

• contains copyrighted materials owned by others (including music, photographs, sculptures, paintings, and other works of art or images published on or in websites, television, movies or other media), without permission to the extent permission is necessary

• contains materials embodying the names, likenesses, voices, or other indicia identifying any person, including, without limitation, celebrities and/or other public or private figures, living or dead, without permission to the extent permission is necessary; 

• communicates messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or good will with which the UCI Libraries wishes to associate; and/or

• violates any law.

By making a Submission to this Contest, an entrant agrees that the UCI Libraries may obtain other Submissions that are similar or identical in theme, format or other respects to that submitted by entrant. Entrant acknowledges that, by making a Submission, the UCI Libraries does not waive any rights to use similar or related ideas previously known to the UCI Libraries, or developed by its employees, or obtained from sources other than entrant. Entrant  (and, if an eligible minor, his/her parent or legal guardian) further agrees that the UCI Libraries shall not have any liability to entrant for any direct, indirect, contributory, vicarious, secondary or other infringement or protection of any copyright in or to entrant's Submission.  The UCI Libraries has the right to review all Submissions before posting.

By making a Submission, entrant hereby grants permission for the Submission to be posted on the UCI Libraries websites and otherwise used by the UCI Libraries in accordance with the grant of rights set forth above. Entrant agrees that Released Parties (as defined below) are not responsible for any unauthorized use of Submissions by third parties. Released Parties do not guarantee the posting of any Submission and may take down any Submission for any reason at any time. An entrant agrees that he/she will not use the Submission for any other purpose, including, without limitation, posting the Submission to any other online social networks, without the express consent of the UCI Libraries in each instance.

You must choose a Creative Commons license for your submission.  The UCI Libraries will label your video with your selected license when it is uploaded to YouTube.  The UCI Libraries' rights to use of the video as stated above will not be altered by your Creative Commons license choise.  For more information see the contest entry form or http://creativecommons.org/choose/

Winner Determination

Judges’ Pick Award Winner Determination: During the 2 week period following the end of the Entry Period, all eligible Submissions received by the UCI Libraries will be judged by a panel of qualified judges based on the following judging criteria and percentages:

(a)  overall entertainment value (30%);

(b)  passion in communication of the “Love of Your Library” (30%)

(c) overall quality of video (20%);

(d) creativity (20%);

The Submission with the highest score, as determined by the judging panel based on the Judging criteria, will be deemed the Judges’ Pick Award Winner subject to compliance with these Official Rules. In the event of a tie, the Submission with the highest score in the passion and communication of the dream criteria from among the tying Submissions will be deemed the potential Judges’ Pick Award Winner. If there is still a tie, the score received for overall entertainment value, then creativity, and finally quality of video will be used to break the tie. The odds of winning a prize depend on the number of Submissions received, and the quality of an entrant’s Submission as compared to other Submissions submitted in the relevant Entry Period as determined by the judging panel based on the Judging Criteria.

Audience Award Winner Determination: The top 5 videos as determined by the judges will be posted for viewer voting online. The video with the most votes at the end of this period will be awarded the Audience Award. The video selected as the Judges’ Pick Award Winner will not be eligible for the Audience Award.

The UCI Libraries reserves the right to not award all prizes for any prize level if, in its sole discretion, it does not receive a sufficient number of eligible and/or qualified Submissions for a prize level or otherwise. All prize awards are subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with the terms of these Official Rules.  The decisions of the the UCI Libraries and judges are final and binding in all matters. Limit one (1) prize per person/household.  

Prize Winner Notification: 

Potential prize winners will be notified by telephone, email or mail and required to complete, sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility, within 48 hours of date of notification. Noncompliance with this requirement, or if prize/prize notification is returned as nondeliverable, if a potential winner cannot be contacted within a reasonable time period or if a potential winner is found to be ineligible or not in compliance with these Official Rules, such prize will be forfeited and, at the UCI Libraries’ discretion, may be awarded to a runner-up, time permitting. If a potential prize winner is deemed a minor in the state/province/territory of his/her residence, prize may be awarded in the name of his/her parent or legal guardian and he/she will be responsible for fulfilling all requirements imposed on winners set forth herein.

General Rules: 

Submissions, entries or votes generated by script, macro or other automated means or by any means which subvert the entry or voting process will be void.  The UCI Libraries and it’s respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliated companies, advertising, Contest or production agencies and all of their respective officers, directors, representatives, agents and employees (collectively, “Released Parties”) are not responsible for lost, late, damaged, delayed, inaccurate, incomplete, garbled, mutilated or misdirected Submissions or entries or votes, or for Submissions or entries or votes not received by the applicable deadline, or for electronic, network or computer failures or malfunctions, lost or unavailable network connections, or failed, incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmission that may limit a user’s ability to participate in this Contest, or other hardware, software or technical errors of any kind including any injury or damage to any person’s computer related to or resulting from participating in the Contest or for other errors or difficulties of any kind whether human, mechanical, electronic, computer, network, typographical, printing or otherwise relating to or in connection with the Contest, including, without limitation, errors or difficulties which may occur in connection with the administration of the Contest, the processing of entries or Submissions, the judging of Submissions, the tabulation of votes, the announcement of the prizes, or in any Contest related materials. Released Parties assume no responsibility for undeliverable mails resulting from any form of active or passive email filtering by a user’s Internet service provider and/or insufficient space in user’s email account to receive mail. The UCI Libraries reserve the right to cancel or modify the Contest (or any portion thereof) at any time and for any reason, including, but not limited to, if fraud, misconduct or technical failures destroy the integrity of the Contest or if a computer virus, bug, or other technical problem corrupts the administration, security, or proper administration of the Contest as determined by The UCI Libraries/judging agency, in their sole discretion.  If the Contest (or any portion thereof) is so cancelled, judging for the Entry Period(s) at issue will be conducted from among all nonsuspect, eligible Submissions received for such Entry Period(s) prior to the time of termination. In the event a dispute arises regarding specific individual entitled to receive prize, entry will be declared made by the “authorized email account holder” and he/she must be eligible according to these Official Rules.  Any damage made to the Web Site will also be the responsibility of the authorized email account holder of the UCInetID at the time of entry.  “Authorized email account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to a UCInetID by UC Irvine. Entrant may be requested to provide the UCI Libraries with proof that the entrant is the authorized account holder of the UCInetID associated with the account/submission. Proof of submitting Submissions/entries will not be deemed to be proof of receipt by the UCI Libraries.  The UCI Libraries reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to prohibit the participation of an individual (and void all associated Submissions and votes) if fraud or tampering is suspected, or if the individual fails to comply with any requirement of participation as stated herein or with any provision in these Official Rules.  CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY AN INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEB SITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THIS CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS, AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, THE UCI LIBRARIES RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES AND OTHER REMEDIES (INCLUDING ATTORNEYS’/LEGAL FEES) FROM ANY SUCH INDIVIDUAL TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW.  The Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, provincial and local laws and regulations.  Entrants (or entrant’s parent/legal guardian if entrant is deemed a minor in the state/province/territory of his/her residence), by participating in this Contest, hereby waive and release, and agree to hold harmless the Released Parties from and against, any and all rights, claims and causes of action whatsoever that they may have, or which may arise, against any of them for any liability for any matter, cause or thing whatsoever, including but not limited to any injury, loss, damage, whether direct, compensatory, incidental or consequential, to person, including death, and/or property, arising in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from their acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize (or any travel or activity related thereto), or their participation in this Contest, or any prizer elated activity, or the rights granted herein.
